Lutheran/Christian Basics
As Christians, Lutherans share the following beliefs:
- We worship One who is revealed to us in three ways, Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- God is the Creator of the Universe and all that is in it.
- God created humans in God’s image
- God is love and wants what’s best for Creation, including to be in a relationship with us as individuals.
- God’s Son, Jesus, is both human and divine.
- He came to live on Earth as a human to show us how to live as people loved by God.
- He died on a cross and rose from the dead in order to save us from sin and make us right with God.
- The Holy Spirit is God’s continuing presence in the the world
- The Holy Spirit unites God’s children on earth, creating the Church
- The Holy Spirit teaches us how to love God and our neighbors
- The Bible is inspired by God and written by human beings
- It is the story of God’s actions through out human history
- It shares the story of God’s ultimate loved revealed in the life, death, and rising from the dead of Jesus
- Sin is our human rebellion against God
- It is seen in our selfishness, violence, and hatred toward others
- It separates us from God and leads to death
As Lutherans we emphasize:
- Justification by Faith
- There is nothing we can do or say to earn God’s love – Jesus’ death and resurrection did it for us.
- Salvation is a gift. Believing is a gift. Heaven is a gift. We call this gift: Grace.
- Doing good deeds won’t get us into Heaven, but rather, good works are a natural response to God’s amazing grace and love.
- The Sacraments
- In Holy Baptism, God claims us as God’s children, promising that nothing will ever separate us from God’s love.
- In Holy Communion, Jesus is present in the bread and wine for our forgiveness and salvation
