What is a Lutheran?
Martin Luther was a reformer of
the church in sixteenth century Germany. What Luther provided for the
church of his age and for our age is a witness to what God has done for
us in Christ. Through Christ we have peace with God as we receive the
gifts of faith, love, and life. As Lutherans we lift high the cross of
Christ in our proclamation of the Word of God and as we gather to
celebrate the sacraments of baptism and communion.
What is the foundational to the
Lutheran perspective is how we are Christ centered in our relationship
with God. That is the key point of Luther's reform, to move salvation
from being what we should do for ourselves through our own works to
what God has already worked out for us and our salvation through Christ.
Lutherans today make up one of
the largest Christian church bodies in the world and can be found
throughout the globe. Each local church continues to stress God's free
and gracious gift of salvation brought for us through the death and
resurrection of his son, Jesus.
